MEETING #7 - Ornithology & Avian Conservation
Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our 7th meeting!
In this meeting, we will be discussing about and giving an overview for February 28th - our next event, where we will be on-site at the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area, with Capilano University professor Caroline Dingle, to learn about the site, it’s history, and have the opportunity to contribute to science and collect data on the birds in the area.
We will be discussing methods of data collection, as well as talking about the site and common birds. We will go over a couple of ID guides and how to use them in the field, which will be critical to collecting accurate data.

In this meeting, we will be repeating our meeting from Tuesday - discussing about and giving an overview for February 28th - our next event, where we will be on-site at the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area, with Capilano University professor Caroline Dingle, to learn about the site, it’s history, and have the opportunity to contribute to science and collect data on the birds in the area.

Maplewood Flats: Bird Conservation with Caroline Dingle
EVENT #2 - Maplewood Flats Conservation Area: Bird Conservation with Caroline Dingle
Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our second-ever event at North Vancouver’s Maplewood Flats Conservation Area - Help us take direct action by spending time out in nature, walking through the forest observing the wildlife in the trees (birds!), and take the opportunity to learn how to document and record data on the avians that we co-exist with!
Take the time to meet fellow members of our club, make friends and build connections between people who want to help protect wildlife.
We are meeting at 9:00 AM at the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area, Vancouver - right at the start of the path, where the squatters’ home sculpture is. We aim to begin our walk around 9:30 AM, and finish close to around 12:00 PM.
Being out in nature and helping our wildlife - this event will occur RAIN OR SHINE - please be dressed for the weather and prepare in advance for any inclement weather.

In this meeting, we will be going over one of the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society’s primary four pillars - education.
Tonight, club president Mel Villagracia will be delivering a lecture on the power of communicating science - and how to do in an engaging, enjoyable, organized, and relevant matter - and how to develop your skills as a natural heritage interpreter, not just as an educator. From learning how to be an interpreter, you will then have the option to begin creating an interpretive powerpoint on whatever interests you as a wildlife enthusiast - which will be presented next week!

Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our fifth-ever event in Vancouver’s Stanley Park! - Come join us as we learn from guest speaker Chelsea Ryan, Assistant Manager of Guest Programming at the Vancouver Aquarium (president’s manager! lol), AZA Member, & Bird Friendly Coffee and Chocolate board director, as we spend time learning about various forms of avian wildlife in Stanley Park and British Columbia, and how our actions on one side of the planet will affect wildlife on the other side

EVENT #5 - Vancouver Aquarium Visit
Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our fourth-ever event at the Vancouver Aquarium! - Come join us as we spend time learning about various forms of marine wildlife, along our coastline and around the rest of the world - Come join us as we take the time to observe wildlife that we co-exist with!
Take the time to meet fellow members of our club, make friends and build connections between people who want to help protect wildlife.
We are meeting at 9:30 AM at the Vancouver Aquarium, - right in front of the main entrance. - We aim to enter around 10 AM, and finish all of our educational plans closer to 2:30PM!
This event will occur RAIN OR SHINE - please be dressed for the weather and prepare in advance for any inclement weather, however we will be both indoors and outdoors.
International Bear Day
Outreach: International Bear Day
Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for an all-day outreach event!
International Bear Day is an international day recognized annually every March 23rd, to raise awareness on the conservation efforts to protect all species of bears. Six of eight species are threatened, and it’s up to us to make sure that we, as humans, can co-exist with these gentle giants.
Take the time to meet fellow members of our club, make friends and build connections between people who want to help protect wildlife.
We are going to be holding our own booth from the morning to the late afternoon, as well as hosting various interpretive programs around on campus - come find us!
This event will occur RAIN OR SHINE - please be dressed for the weather and prepare in advance for any inclement weather, however we will be both indoors and outdoors.
Meeting #15 - Biodiversity: Why & How

Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our 15th meeting!
In this meeting, we will be training anyone who would like to participate in this week’s event, where we will be dedicating a day to the ocean at Ambleside & John Lawson park, where we will complete a full shoreline cleanup in the morning, then, in the afternoon - a bioblitz at low tide to create a more accurate snapshot of the biodiversity of the many beaches within Vancouver
We will be training you on methods of biodiversity analysis, and how to use apps such as iNaturalist to contribute to the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility!)
This event is MANDATORY for those wanting to be involved in the bioblitz part of the event on March 30. If you attended a week #5 meeting, where we also covered iNaturalist, you may skip this meeting. If you do not wish to be involved in the bioblitz section, you may skip this meeting.

A Day For The Ocean: Shoreline Cleanup & BioBlitz - Ambleside & John Lawson Park
EVENT #5 - A Day For The Ocean
Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our fifth-ever event at the Ambleside Beach & John Lawson Park! - Come join us as we spend a day for the ocean, cleaning up trash that would have otherwise made it out into the homes of many animals, as well documenting various forms of marine wildlife on our coastline to create a more accurate snapshot of the biodiversity along the beaches of Vancouver - Come join us as we take the time to observe and document the wildlife that we co-exist with!
Take the time to meet fellow members of our club, make friends and build connections between people who want to help protect wildlife.
We are meeting at 10:00 AM at Ambleside Beach, - right in front of the stretch of rocks that head out to the totem pole. - We aim to begin around 10:30 AM, and finish our cleanup by 12:30, where we will then initiate our BioBlitz around John Lawson park closer to 1:00 PM.

In this meeting, we will be bringing in supplies for a Make Your Own Merch night! We encourage everyone to bring in their own older, unused shirts or other garments, to reuse and decorate it in a new manner that represents the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society!

A Day Out: Deep Cove
EVENT #6 - A Day Out: Deep Cove
Join the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Society, and its executive team, for our sixth-ever event in Deep Cove! - Come join us as we spend a day out in the ocean!
We are planning on heading out into the water - we will be looking into options for paddleboarding and kayaking, as well as getting to learn about various water quality sampling techniques! We’ll then finish the day off with a sunset picnic, to round it all together!

We are meeting at 2:00 PM at Panorama Park, - right by the picnic shelter - We aim to begin around 2 PM, and finish the day off closer to 6PM, hopefully to time the sunset perfectly with our picnic :)

In this fifth meeting, we will be completing our routine huddle and catch-up, and then we will be joined virtually by representatives of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine for an infosession about their institution, and paths in veterinary medicine that students in Canada will be able to take up.
